Founding Story

Every change begins with a story

The founding story of Hawa’s Hope

Hawa’s Hope was born out of heartbreak. When Hawa, a young mother in Sierra Leone, died during childbirth, she left behind her newborn and four other children. Her death was preventable – caused not by fate, but by the lack of skilled care and resources.

Two nurses, deeply moved by her story, refused to let it end there. From their grief grew a determination to act – to build something that could turn tragedy into transformation.

A short film about
the heart behind Hawa’s Hope

From grief to action

What began as sorrow soon became a mission. The founders asked themselves: How many more women must die before change comes?

In 2018, Hawa’s Hope was officially established as a nonprofit organization. With early partnerships in Sierra Leone and support from colleagues in the U.S., the first trainings were organized. Midwives and students came together in classrooms and birthing centers, eager to learn skills that could save lives.

The approach was clear from the start: practical, hands-on learning that empowered midwives with confidence. Over time, partnerships deepened — with midwifery schools, hospitals, and government leaders. Each step built momentum, and each training was a promise that Hawa’s story would not be repeated.

Our mission and values guide every action we take.

A vision that lives on

Today, Hawa’s Hope continues to grow, but its mission has never changed: no woman should die giving life.
